Philippine Export of Coconut Products Down in March

Official data from the Philippine Statistics Authority show the Philippines exported in March this year 147,477 MT of coconut products measured in copra terms.  This is slightly lower by 4.1% from 153,728 MT in a similar period a year earlier.  Gross export receipts amounted to USD165.082 million, recording a shortfall of 23.8% from prior year at USD216.675 million largely on account of low coconut oil prices.

Major exports posted year-on-year decline.  Coconut oil though hardly dropped at 82,847 MT from 84,355 MT (-1.8%).  Oleochemicals likewise fell slightly by 2.5% at 7,837 MT as copra from 8,038 MT. The sharpest decline was registered by desiccated coconut at 31.2% at 5,249 MT from 7,628 MT.  Export of copra meal was 31,841 MT as against nil last year and shipment of copra was 22 MT, likewise nil last year.  

Other products performed as follows in MT: coco shell charcoal 7,078 (+222.6% from 2,194 last year), activated carbon 6,567 (-0.8% from 6,623), virgin coconut oil 1,500 (-2.5% from 1,538), coco water 6.698 million liters (+87.7% from 3.568 million), fresh coconuts 129,797 nuts (-42.2% from 224,550), Others 10,037 (-42.2% from 17,357).

The cumulative figure for the first quarter of this year reached 361,942 MT in copra terms, a contraction by 31.2% from 525,741 MT at the same time year-earlier. Breakdown is as follows, in MT: copra 22 (nil), coconut oil 202,164 (298,838), copra meal 99,593 (29,457), desiccated coconut 19,806 (22,410), oleochemicals as copra 10,404 (16,747); coco shell charcoal 15,993 (8,034), activated carbon 17,828 (17,538), virgin coconut oil 4,547 (4,149), coco water 19.053 million liters (15.127 million), fresh coconuts 348,262 nuts (351,572), Others 24,725 (34,083).
