EU Still Largest Biodiesel Producer

Thursday, January 30, 2020

Germany’s Union for the Promotion of Oil and Proteins Plants (UFOP) on December 16 said biodiesel production in the EU has increased for another year and accounted for 34% of the 41 million tons produced globally in 2018.  Major biodiesel producers in 2018 were the EU, the USA, Brazil and Argentina.

Indonesia and Malaysia, the major palm oil producers, had steady increase in biodiesel production, driven by a rising glut and the associated pressure on prices in the vegetable oil markets.   The countries were raising their domestic blending mandate to B30 in the case of Indonesia from B20, and to B20 in the case of Malaysia from B10, with a view to improve  palm oil prices, reduce stocks and lessen foreign exchange expenses on petroleum imports.
