New Coconut Neera Beverage Outlet Opens in Tamil Nadu District

A report from The Hindu datelined Pudukottai,  June 28, said an exclusive retail outlet of coconut neera, a health drink,  has been opened near bus stand by a coconut farmers producers’ company in Aranthangi town in Pudukottai district.  This is a first in the district and will be run by Pudukottai Coconut Farmers Producers Company, which comprises 1,000 coconut growers as members. The company has decided to sell coconut neera in units of 200 ml and one litre for Rs30 (USD0.44) and Rs150 (USD 2.18)  respectively.

District Collector S. Ganesh launched the first sale of the beverage at the outlet in the presence of farmers and representatives of the company.  Company chairman Peer Sheikh said the firm was opened three years ago with the objective of helping coconut growers. Coconut neera contained minerals and vitamins, making it a perfect health drink for all. It was a value-added product. The drink would be sold in disposable tumblers at the outlet, which would also sell raw coconuts by weight.

Inaugurating the outlet, the Collector said the State government had approved the sale of coconut neera with the intention of safeguarding the welfare of coconut growers. Tapping of coconut neera would help in augmenting the income for growers, besides being a perfect health drink. Among those who took part in the launch were Ravindrakumar, executive director, Pudukottai Coconut Farmers Producers Company, farmers and administration officials.
