Toyota in Brazil Accepts Corn or Soyabean as Payment for Vehicles

Japanese car manufacturer Toyota is accepting soyabeans or corn as payment for vehicles in Brazil, the company announced recently last month.  The Toyota barter program, initially a pilot project in 2019, allowed farmers to bring their crops to the car manufacturer.  After a check by a third-party, NovaAgri, to make sure the crops had been farmed sustainably, a new car would be provided, the company said. Choices of car were limited to three vehicles: the classic Hilux, the new Corolla Cross and the SW4, a small SUV not available in the USA.
 
Toyota did not specify the quantity of soyabeans or corn that would be needed to purchase a vehicle but said it would “[consider] the market value of the bags.” The company said it was currently operating the program in a limited number of Brazilian states but with plans to expand it in the future.
