Thursday, November 24, 2022External trade of coco shell charcoal for the month of August was 10,438 MT and was worth USD7.245 million. This month income was 15.2% higher than last year. Bulk of the month’s shipment went to China at 7,320 MT (70.1%). Japan also bought sizable volume at 2,906 MT (27.8%) while South Korea took in the remaining 212 MT (2.0%).
On the other hand, activated carbon shipment in the same month at 7,789 MT generated USD15.010 million in foreign exchange receipts, a steep rise from USD11.323 million in the preceding year (+32.6%) on sharply improved volume. Key markets were Germany with purchases of 1,755 MT (22.5%), Japan 1,619 MT (20.8%) and the US at 1,092 MT (14.0%). Significant tonnage was likewise imported by four countries and accounted for 24.7% of total. The countries were South Korea 694 MT, Taiwan 462 MT, Canada 393 MT, Sri Lanka 375 MT.
Lower loads in the range 102-293 MT were delivered to China, Indonesia, Thailand, Peru, and Finland which together made up 11.7% of the market. Volume under 100 MT (11-90 MT range) were bought by 11 countries and together comprised 6.3%. These countries were Mexico, Congo, South Africa, Italy, Belgium, Switzerland, Sweden, France, Vietnam, Singapore, Hong Kong.

Coco shell charcoal export in July at 9,986 MT turned in USD6.224 million (-2.3% from last year). China took in most of the load and was responsible for 80.1% or 8,002 MT. Other importers were Japan at 1,705 MT (17.1%) and South Korea and Jordan with respective orders of 254 MT and 25 MT.
External trade of activated carbon in the same month which totaled 7,430 MT generated USD14.040 million (+1.6%). Key buyers were Germany with orders at 1,818 MT (24.5%), Japan with 1,336 MT (18.0%), the US with 1,190 MT (16.0%) and South Korea with 796 MT (10.7%). The next set of importers had purchases ranging 105-497 MT and together accounted for 22.7%. This included Sri Lanka, Taiwan, China, Indonesia, Sweden and Thailand.
Smaller loads under 100 MT (12-98 MT range) were ordered by 12 other countries namely, Vietnam, Finland, South Africa, Italy, Tanzania, Congo, Mexico, Switzerland, Canada, Brazil, Netherlands, United Kingdom. Their aggregate market share was 8.1%.

Export of coconut shell charcoal at 10,516 MT earned USD6.867 million in June. Bulk of the month’s sales went to China amounting to 7,999 MT or more than three fourths of the pack (76.1%). Japan also imported significant volume at 2,363 MT (22.5%), while South Korea handled the remaining 155 MT (1.5%).
In the same month, activated carbon sold 6,498 MT valued USD12.706 million. Unlike coco shell charcoal, there were much more buyers for activated carbon during the month numbering 21 and led by Japan and the US with respective uptakes at 1,184 MT (18.2%) and 1,123 MT (17.3%). Following behind were China at 756 MT, Germany 750 MT, Taiwan 566 MT, and South Korea 560 MT, which rounded up the top six, and jointly contributing 40.5%.
Five other countries took in volume lower than 500 MT in the range 110-489 MT, collectively sharing 18.8% from total load of 1,220 MT, namely Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Peru, Sweden, Canada. However, 10 other countries had smaller orders ranging 4-79 MT that included United Kingdom, France, Vietnam, Thailand, Italy, Congo, South Africa, Mexico, Belgium, Singapore. Their collective market share was 5.2% from 339 MT.
