Performance of Philippine Top Non-Tradtional Coconut Products Export in June

Data from the Philippine Statistics Authority revealed 21 non-traditional coconut products generated export revenue of more than USD100,000 in June, the highest number so far in a single month, thus qualified in the top non-traditional export products category.  The top 11 export products recorded earnings above one million US dollars during the month.  This included coconut water, virgin coconut oil, glycerin, coconut milk liquid, hydrogenated coconut oil, fatty acid distillates, coconut water concentrates, coconut milk powder, biodiesel, toilet/bath soap, other coconut oil.


Top export COCONUT WATER generated USD11.133 million during the month from shipment of 12,591 MT.  Volume grew nearly 6-fold from same month last year at 2,109 MT. The US was primary destination responsible for 55.8% of total volume or 7,020 MT, followed by United Kingdom with 3,466 MT or 27.5%. Other destinations took in volume lower than 600 MT (116-574 MT range) such as Netherlands, Canada, China, Australia, Hong Kong, United Arab Emirates, and nine others with uptake below 100 MT (0.64-89 MT range) such as Taiwan, France, Oman, South Korea, Germany, Singapore, Argentina, New Zealand, Bahrain.


VIRGIN COCONUT OIL as second placer turned in USD8.550 million after sales of 2,280 MT, though tonnage contracted 25.2% from 3,048 MT.  The US was market leader cornering nearly two-thirds of the pack (62.1%) at 1,417 MT.  Other countries took in much lower volume (158-280 MT range) namely Germany, United Kingdom, Canada, and 13 others with volume under 100 MT (0.46-76 MT range) namely China, Australia, Argentina, Netherlands, Malaysia, Israel, France, Croatia, Marshall Islands, New Zealand, Taiwan, Japan, Hong Kong.


As third major export, GLYCERIN earned USD4.082 million from orders amounting to 3,466 MT, lower by 10.8% from previous year at 3,888 MT.  Key markets were China at 1,466 MT and Japan at 1,186 MT with respective market shares of 42.3% and 34.2%. Other outlets were South Korea with 356 MT (10.3%), Thailand 203 MT (5.9%), and six others with market shares below 4% (volume range of 11-127 MT) namely United Arab Emirates, Australia, Taiwan, Singapore, Vietnam, France.
 
LIQUID COCONUT MILK occupied the fourth slot with income of USD2.866 million from delivery of 1,706 MT.  Quantity represents a 10.8% shortfall from previous year at 1,912 MT.  Malaysia was principal importing country at 613 MT (35.9%), trailed by Netherlands at 496 MT (29.0%), US 279 MT (16.3%), United Kingdom 101 MT (5.9%) and seven others with orders below 100 MT (2-68 MT range).  The latter comprised of Australia, Spain, China, Russia, Japan, United Arab Emirates, Taiwan.


HYDROGENATED COCONUT OIL landed fifth with export receipts of USD1.720 million, the value of 972 MT shipment which rocketed over 14 times from previous year at 66 MT.  United Kingdom headed the list of buyers at 456 MT (47.0%).  Trailing behind were Canada 159 MT, US 153 MT, Germany 90 MT, Taiwan 70 MT and five others with volume range of 0.37-20 MT namely Hong Kong, Australia, Singapore, Israel, China.


FATTY ACID DISTILATES ranked sixth with proceeds amounting to USD1.568 million from traded volume of 1,160 MT. Orders declined 27.6% when compared with last year at 1,602 MT.  China uptake of 409 MT (35.3%) topped seven other countries that included India with 205 MT (17.7%), Pakistan 159 MT (13.7%), South Korea 111 MT (9.6%), Brazil 98 MT (8.4%), Taiwan 81 MT (7.0%), US 76 MT (6.6%), and Malaysia 20 MT (1.7%). 

  
COCONUT WATER CONCENTRATES held the seventh spot with earnings of USD1.449 million.  Overseas purchases of 487 MT massively pruned last year volume of 11,928 MT by 95.9%.  There were only four country buyers led by the US at 271 MT (55.7%), followed by China 102 MT (20.8%), United Kingdom 91 MT (18.6%), and Brazil 24 MT (4.9%).


COCONUT MILK POWDER turnover at USD1.352 million made it to eighth place.  Volume sold at 231 MT was 4.4% short of prior year at 242 MT.  Top three destinations were the US at 80 MT (34.5%), Japan 53 MT (23.0%) and Mexico 46 MT (19.9%).  Other markets were Netherlands 25 MT (11.0%), United Kingdom 14 MT (5.9%), South Korea 12 MT (5.3%) and Czech Republic and Hong Kong which took in the remainder.


Shipment of BIODIESEL at 438 MT worth USD1.181 million went to four countries with Germany as market leader capturing 59.4% or 260 MT.  The product was top nine in revenue generation.  Other importers were Japan at 78 MT (17.8%), South Korea 60 MT (13.7%) and Spain 40 MT (9.1%).  There was no reported export of biodiesel last year.


Completing the top 11 products dubbed as million-dollar export earners were TOILET/BATH SOAP with delivery of 446 MT turning in USD1.177 million and COCONUT OIL, OTHER with sales of 356 MT worth USD1.098 million.  The former increased this year load by 2.2% from 437 MT year-ago contrasting with reduction of 10.6% in the latter from 399 MT.


Key markets for toilet/bath soap were Singapore at 177 MT (39.7%) and Vietnam 145 MT (32.5%).  Other destinations were United Arab Emirate 45 MT (10.0%), Nigeria 25 MT (5.5%) and 11 others with market shares lower than 5% (uptake ranging 0.17-19 MT) comprising of Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Thailand, Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, Taiwan, the US, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Cyprus.  On the other hand, coconut oil, other, went mainly to Singapore at 158 MT (44.5%), trailed by Australia 87 MT (24.3%), China 59 MT (16.5%), Germany 19 MT (5.5%) and three others of lower market shares (5-17 MT range) namely Mexico, South Korea and New Zealand.


Also included in the top non-traditional export products category were coco chips, nata de coco, coir & coir products, coco dust/peat, young coconut (meat/chips, dried, sliced), coconut (meat/chips dried, grated), coconut flour, makapuno, coconut syrup, and coconut sugar.  (More on this next issue).
