Local Coconut Hybrid Best for Sap Production

Thursday, December 15, 2022

PCA 15-10, developed by the Philippine Coconut Authority, is a hybrid between “Tacunan Dwarf” and “Laguna Tall” coconut varieties.  Its nuts are significantly robust, have thicker girth, and good vegetative growth. It is most suitable for the production of coconut sap products like coconut sugar, coconut honey, coconut sap juice, and coconut vinegar, according to a post of DOST-PCAARRD at the Facebook page of the Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA).  DOST-PCAARRD is Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development.

Massive production of PCA 15-10 planting materials is being done through a project of DOST-PCAARRD and PCA, where two nurseries in Quezon Province were established to handle the hybrids before field planting.  Recent report shows that the project was able to distribute 7,660 PCA 15-10 hybrids to 50 farmers in around 30 municipalities in CALABARZON, and 2 municipalities in MIMAROPA regions covering approximately 70 hectares.
