Private Label Products Gaining Popularity in Europe Due to Price, Quality and Sustainability: Reseach

Thursday, October 5, 2023

New research from global packaging producer Amcor showed the overwhelming popularity of private label products within Europe, reported by FoodNavigator-Europe. This was based on responses from 3,000 shoppers from France, Germany, Italy, Poland, the Netherlands, and the UK, where 70% of consumers assessed regularly buy private label, with 50% of these planning to continue because of their satisfaction with the products’ quality, the report said.
Price rated highly in decisions to buy private level items at 85% of those assessed, though ‘promotions’ for the 48% were another factor in their choices.  Quality also was a factor for the pivot to private label with many of respondents saying the products had ‘better taste’ than branded products, while others used ‘cleaner ingredients’ as justification.  On consumers approval of private label due to concerns about sustainability, 42% of respondents consider products produced locally are made with greater concern about sustainability.
Packaging concerns also played a key role to the private label appeal with consumers seeing progress in areas such as ‘food waste reduction’, less ‘excessive packaging’, and more ‘sustainable packaging’. Many of them said that ‘paper packaging’, ‘recyclable packaging’, ‘less packaging’, and ‘less plastic’ were among what drove them to buy more private label products.
