Thursday, April 11, 2024

Coconuts have been designated one of the six primary national industrial crops by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development. It is projected that the country’s coconut cultivation area will expand to 195,000-210,000 hectares by 2030 which should produce substantial harvest of over 2 million tons, reported by Vietnam Plus.
Under Decision No. 431/QD-BDD-TT dated January 26, 2024, approving the Project for developing key industrial crops to 2030, coconut output is expected to reach 2.1-2.3 million tons.   Bulk of the country’s coconut area is at the Mekong Delta, which is projected to rise to 170,000-175,000 hectares; the remainder would come from South-central coastal region at 16,000 to 20,000 hectares and other regions at 9,000-15,000 hectares.  In 2021, coconut area was at 164,000 hectares.
Under the project, there will be intensive development of two products: processed coconut and fresh coconut.  The focus would be on products with high added value as well as new products.  This included dried coconut, coconut milk powder, coconut cream, coconut oil, coconut carpet, and coconut-based handicrafts.
