Sri Lanka Launches Mobile Coconut Sales Program

A mobile coconut sales program has been launched by the Ministry of Plantations to provide consumers with coconuts at an affordable price.  Following the program, the Coconut Development Authority (CDA) will provide coconuts at a retail price of between Rs100 and Rs120, the Daily Mirror online reported on October 23.
The first phase of the program was launched on October 23 in the Colombo, Sri Jayawardenapura Kotte and the Kaduwela Municipal Council areas. A press release by the ministry states that mobile coconut sales vehicles have been deployed near the Welikada Police Station in Colombo, the Kirulapone market, the Finance Ministry premises, and the Welikada Police Station in the Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte Municipal Council area. Additional locations include the Ananda Samarakoon Open Air Theater in Nugegoda, the Sethsiripaya premises covering Kaduwela and Battaramulla, and near the Coconut Cultivation Board on Denzil Kobbekaduwa Mawatha. 
Initially, under the program, the Coconut Cultivation Board will supply approximately 10,000 coconuts to the market on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Afterwards, 5,000 coconuts will be released on other days of the week, making a total of 15,000 coconuts available to meet the local demand. In addition, the Kurunegala Plantations Company has arranged to supply 1,500 coconuts daily from October 22, and the Chilaw Plantations Company will supply 3,000 coconuts daily.
