Malaysia Imports 735 MT of Mature Coconuts as of March 04

A report datelined Kuala Lumpur, March 6 (Bernama) has said the Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (FAMA) and FAMA Corporation Sdn Bhd have imported 734 tons of mature, dehusked coconuts as of March 04 from Sabah and Indonesia, valued at RM2.01 million. 

The initiative, according to Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu, is part of the ministry’s short-term intervention to address rising prices of coconut-based products especially coconut milk. He said part of the supply is distributed to 16 wholesalers and 202 coconut milk entrepreneurs nationwide, to help stabilize prices and ensure continuous supply for the coconut processing industry and other coconut-based products.

In a related development, a total of 60 tons of mature coconuts will be brought into the Malaysian state, Terengganu, in March to ensure sufficient supply for Ramadan and the Aidilfitri celebrations, the Bernama also reported on March 05.

FAMA Terengganu director, Muhamad Fadlee Hassan told a press conference that the supply received from FAMA headquarters will be delivered to the FAMA Operations Center in the state and in Besut for distribution to its affiliated outlets.  He added that the current price of mature coconuts is RM3 per kilogram.  However, the price will fluctuate based on market conditions due to several factors, including supply shortages and global demand competition.
