PCA, VCOP Chart Course for Coco Industry Advancement

Thursday, February 6, 2025

The Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA) on February 06, 2025, met with Virgin Coconut Oil Producers and Traders Association of Philippines, Inc. (VCOP) for first quarter meeting at PCA central office.  Discussions centered on key initiatives and collaborative efforts aimed at boosting coconut production, expanding market access, and enhancing industry competitiveness.
PCA Administrator Dr. Dexter R. Buted outlined a comprehensive update on the authority’s ongoing programs and plans. The presentation covered key initiatives including the agency’s planting and replanting targets, updates on research and innovation, and strategies to navigate emerging international trade concerns. He underscored the significance of collaborative efforts between the government and private sector in maximizing recent positive developments, such as the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) delisting of coconut as an allergen and breakthroughs in clinical studies on coconut’s health benefits.
VCOP members lauded PCA’s achievements over the past year, noting that despite a leadership transition, the Authority has significantly amplified its initiatives. Under the new chief’s guidance, PCA has doubled down on its core programs, driving substantial progress in planting, replanting, fertilization, and infrastructure development.  Industry leaders emphasized the positive impact of these initiatives on coconut farmers, supply chain strengthening, and market expansion. Optimism ran high as members expressed anticipation for the successful implementation of more projects and programs designed to elevate the industry and improve the welfare of coconut growers nationwide.
VCOP members also explored collaborative opportunities with PCA and the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI).  Representatives from DTI’s Coconut Farmers and Industry Development Plan (CFIDP) Project Management Office were present to discuss proposed activities for 2025.   Discussions included a potential US roadshow, like the 2017 initiative, to engage with the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).  The UCAP chairman presented the forthcoming World Coconut Congress happening on September 24-26 this year at the SMX Convention Center Manila.
