Manila Prelate Pushes Used Cooking Oil Collection Drive for Biodiesel

Manila Archbishop Jose Cardinal Advincula is calling on the public to donate used cooking oil to the Archdiocese of Manila, which will process it into biodiesel. He said the diocese’s Ministry of Integral Ecology can produce biodiesel from recycled oil from households, restaurants and other establishments.  

This initiative not only addresses environmental concerns but also contributes, in our own way, to easing pressures on energy resources,” he said in an April 21 circular made public on Sunday. He added that the improper disposal of used cooking oil poses a serious threat to the environment as it clogs waterways and contributes to pollution. If properly collected, however, the used oil can be turned into biodiesel, a renewable and cleaner fuel.

Advincula urged parishes to designate collection points and the donors to keep the oil free from food waste and water and store it in clean, sealed containers.
