Coconut Prices Triple in Vietnam on Supply Shortage and Export Demand

Fresh coconut prices in Ho Chi Minh City and producing regions in Vietnam have increased sharply since April as dry weather and export demand reduced available supply, according to Saigon News dated May 11. 
Nguyen Dinh Tung, chairman of Vina T&T Group, said export demand from China, the U.S., and the European Union has increased following the completion of export requirements for Vietnamese fresh coconuts. Cao Ba Dang Khoa, secretary general of the Vietnam Coconut Association, said external factors, including seasonal conditions, extreme heat, and supply disruptions linked to tensions in the Middle East, contributed to higher export prices, although these accounted for only around 5 per cent of the increase. 
According to Khoa, 90-95 per cent of export price growth is linked to efforts by businesses to standardize cultivation areas, improve product consistency, and maintain quality control standards. He added that businesses should strengthen long-term cooperation agreements with growers to support compliance with export standards.
