Leap in Coconut Milk Prices Recorded in Malaysia

News from Business Today on May 12 has said several key food items recorded price increases in early May, with fresh coconut milk (santan kelapa) posting the sharpest rise, as the government acknowledged growing cost pressures faced by households, particularly in rural areas. 

According to data presented during an economic briefing, selected food prices for the period between May 4 and 6 moved within a range of a 2.0% decline to a 6.7% increase compared with the previous week. Fresh coconut milk rose 6.7% to RM16.88 per kilogram. Smaller increases were observed in other commodities such as mustard greens (sawi) at 4.0%, chub mackerel (ikan kembung) at 3.9%, white prawns at 1.2%, beef +1.4%.  

Meanwhile, annual data from the Department of Statistics Malaysia released last month showed average price of fresh coconut milk in 2025 was RM15.36/kilogram, up 33.1% from RM11.54 in 2024. Grated coconut price was RM11.49/kilogram, up 37.9% from RM8.33
